OUR LINEAGE AND FLOW CHART TO OUR COUSIN - PRESIDENT GEORGE WASHINGTON

"George Washington is our cousin.  He is the grandson of our 1st cousin."

Technically he is the grandson of our 1st cousin 9x removed (generations) on the Haynie side.

I had read a news article that Uncle Hugh (Hugh Doggett Scott Jr.) claimed our ancestor was President Zachary Taylor.  I was very curious.  Was this indeed, true?  But when I read Zachary Taylor was related to George Washington, I had to investigate this further.

The Sarah Ball Haynie, George Washington connection.

Many of us suspected we were related to George Washington, because he left Sarah Ball Haynie $300.00 in his lengthy and very detailed handwritten Will.  He refers to Sarah Haynie Ball as a "distant relation."

The Family Tree & The Paper Trail

I built the family tree to George Washington to prove or disprove the Washington connection, but it wasn't enough. I had to prove it with the paper documentation to verify. I had to lay all speculation to rest.

I researched and hunted down the paper trail of proofs.  At the very end, I hired researchers to help find actual documents proving the final few ancestors to complete the connection.  This is why rumor has reigned over fact for so long.  No documents.  The variable spellings provided hurdles.  Haynie was spelled about 4 different ways, in various documents.  Maximillian Haynie (there were 2), had many variations of spellings for Maximillian, Maxamillion, etc.

I was almost not successful.  One paper link missing of the Alexander Haynie Will, almost made this improvable. The proofs of this heritage line hinged completely on the physical paper proofs on the Will of Alexander Haynie and the marriage bond to Nancy Welch paperwork.

I have the paper work proofs of each marriage, birth record, to prove beyond a doubt this line.

We need to recognize & thank the following:

I would like to thank Preston Haynie, who is no longer with us, for his in depth research into the Haynie lines and his book publications, which helped confirm Haynie lines.   He was very active at the Virginia, Northumberland Historical Society.

I would also like to personally thank, Scott McGuire who is a Volunteer Researcher at the Northumberland County Historical Society.   The initial emails between me (in metro Atlanta) and Northumberland Historical Society, mentioned having to go through delicate "brittle pieces of paper." But they were eventually successful!

Scott McGuire also coordinated with Tom Wolf, a Senior Researcher of the Northumberland Historical Society, to located the last remaining missing files at the Virginia State Library in Richmond.

I would also like to thank the Virginia State Library in Richmond Virginia who had a microfilm initiative to help preserve many of our ancestors documents.

The women at governmental offices who helped locate the Marriage Certificate of Lola Haynie and Hugh Doggett Scott who were married in Lancaster, Virginia not Richmond as I had originally thought.

And the ladies at the Mary Ball Museum.

  2. Hi Stuart, We are more than likely cousins, as my Grandmother is a direct descendant of the Scott/Doggetts of Fredericksburg. I would google search, "how to organize my genealogy" and find a suggested one that seems best for your needs. Like you, I am finding my way. However, the blog was the easiest way to immediately share with others. Subscribe to the blog, and you will be emailed if I post any new information. ;-) THANKS FOR STOPPING BY AND SAYING HELLO! And feel free to share what you have. Debra
